Kennard "Ken" Everett Voyles passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014, at the age of 90 years, with his wife of 63 years at his bedside. Kennard was born June 10, 1924, to Ezra Everett and Hazel Voyles of Indianapolis, Indiana.
He attended school in Indianapolis before serving in the United States Navy aboard the USS Albany after World War II and in the Naval Reserve until 1958. After his discharge from active duty, Ken went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.
Ken was involved in the designing of the first transistor radio, the Regency TR-1. He had several patents for inventions in the electronics field, and worked for several pioneering companies including the Civil Aeronautics Association, Bell Labs, Phillips, and Diebold.
He married Joan Sherwood on February 24, 1951. They had one son, Douglas Voyles, of Boerne, Texas. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Boerne.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Richard Voyles. Ken is survived by his wife, Joan; son, Douglas; daughter-in-law, Patricia Voyles; grandson, Robert Estes and wife Shanna; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Robert Estes; nephew, Richard Voyles; and niece, Stephanie Mangum.
