Obituary:

Elwood S. "Woody" Nelson Sr., born to Edwin and Olga Nelson on March 9, 1919, passed away in Boerne on Friday, May 2, 2014. He was 95 years old. He was raised with his brothers and sisters in Nelson City, Texas.

Woody married Ida Mae Cravey on her birthday on November 29, 1941. Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7th and Woody was called up to serve in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He remained stateside throughout, training numerous soldiers to go overseas.

Woody and Ida Mae had one son, Elwood S. Nelson Jr., nickname "Tubby." They shared 71 years together and had a good and happy life and were inseparable in both their love and marriage. They lived in San Antonio, Texas, for many years and moved back to Kendall County in 1971, to live on the Cravey Ranch. They lived there until 2011, when they needed to move to Cibolo Creek Rehabilitation Center. Even in the nursing home, they were happy because they were together. They held hands right up to the end when Ida passed away November 6, 2013, two weeks before their 72nd wedding anniversary.

Woody leaves his family and friends with many happy memories. Some of those memories involve their place on Lake Placid in McQueeney, Texas. He loved to drive his boat and pull family members while they skied. He also made memories at a wonderful deer lease they had for many years in Bandera, Texas. Woody loved hunting with Ida, Tubby, and lots of friends and family.

Woody owned South San Auto Parts and Garage with his brother-in-law, Otto Voight, for 34 years until he retired in 1981. He enjoyed his retirement out at the ranch and loved relaxing on his large porch. He also loved caring for his large yard and garden, working right alongside his sweetie Ida.

Woody was a devoted husband and father who always taught his son by example to be honest and never lie, and that you can never have too many friends. Most importantly, he believed in Jesus Christ as his Savior.

Woody is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Elwood and Melody Nelson Jr.; his grandchildren: Joy Gonzalez and husband Jose Jr., Sonia Pape and husband Zac, and Justin Mooney and wife Heather. He was blessed with 6 great grandchildren: Hunter, Carter, and Macie Pape, and Jaydon, Joshua, and Savannah Mooney. He is also survived by a sister, Christine Wicker; a brother and sister-in-law, Doyle and Connie Beagle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Woody was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mae (nee Cravey) Nelson; his parents, Edwin and Olga Nelson; and his siblings: Vivian, Harold, Bob, Florence and Sonny Nelson.
