Frederick Charles Mainz Jr. was born in San Antonio, Texas, on October 17, 1936, to Fred Charles Mainz Sr. and Emily Mary Mainz. He passed peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, March 20, 2014, and is now at home with his Lord and Savior.
Fred graduated high school from Central Catholic where he was an honor student. He took courses at American Institute of Banking and La Salle University in preparation for certification as a stockbroker. He moved into banking from 1954-1958, and then worked for a Wall Street Firm from 1958-1979. In 1969 he moved his family to Boerne, then a very small town. In 1980, he began the final chapter of his career as Senior Vice President of Boerne State Bank where he kindled some of his best friendships. After retirement he continued those friendships, enjoying breakfast, mulling over the old days and even joking about starting their own bank.
Fred was an avid outdoorsman and took every opportunity in between work and raising a family to dove and deer hunt on his Uncle Otto Mainz's place in Hondo, Texas. He also leased the entire Fair Oaks Ranch from Ralph Fair for eight or more years. He managed the hunters and was a gracious host to family and friends. Fred has numerous trophy animals that he and wife Annette had harvested over the years. As Fred got older, his desire for hunting gave way to other hobbies. He did continue to enjoy watching and talking about a nice buck that would show up around his home once in a while. He would get so excited in the spring when the new fawns would start arriving.
Fred enjoyed studying and collecting coins as one of his first hobbies. In his later retirement years, his interest moved to NASCAR and old Oilfield Memorabilia. He was meticulous about his finds and enjoyed restoring and displaying them. He never missed an opportunity to share his knowledge and expertise with anyone that would listen. He taught his four children by example how to be honest and hardworking.
