Joseph E. "Ed" Fields, 78, was born October 5, 1935, in Malvern, AR to George and Ruth Fields. He passed away peacefully at home with his family and beloved dogs by his side on Wednesday, November 27, 2013.
Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for over 30 years, beginning as an armorer and culminating as a Sergeant Major of the Army's medical laboratory training program. His awards include: the Army Occupation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, National Defense Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), and Legion of Merit.
After his retirement, he was active as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Second Harvest; and he was a proud member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Pam, of Boerne; daughters Sharon Whittemore of Honolulu, Karen Poasa and her husband Neemia of Honolulu, and Tina Rivera of San Antonio; grandchildren Steven Rivera and Olivia Escobedo of San Antonio, Jeremiah Poasa and Christian Poasa, both of Honolulu, and Shawna Scholz and her husband Nils of Germany; brother Jim Robinson and his wife Gale of Little Rock; sister-in-law Teresa Wilson and her husband John of Las Vegas; brother-in-law, Cliff Maier of York, PA; nephew, Michael Wilson; niece, Katy Wilson; and many cousins.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, George Fields and Ruth Robinson; his step-father, Troy Robinson; and his grandson Aaron Hagemann.
Services will be Wednesday, December 4, 2013. The memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Boerne and inurnment will be at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
