Obituary:

Kenneth Charles Herbst Sr., age 74, of Boerne, Texas, passed away unexpectedly of heart failure on Monday, July 10, 2013. He was born in Boerne on September 11, 1938.

He was the son of the late Alvin and Roma Herbst. He is survived by his sons, Ken, Jr. and Clint, along with Clint's wife Denise and their sons, Kyle and Wil Herbst. He is also survived by countless extended relatives in the Boerne and Sisterdale community, as well as around the state of Texas. Special mention should be made of his close and loving relationships with his cousins Norman Kohls, Kris Kohls Sutherland, Charles Kohls and their families.

He was raised on a working ranch near Sisterdale and graduated from Boerne High School Class of 1957. While at Boerne he played football, baseball, ran track and was an All State trumpet player. Upon graduation from Boerne, he enrolled in Texas A&M in the fall of 1957. He joined the Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets and was a member of the Aggie Band.

After three years of undergraduate study, he applied for and was accepted into Texas A&M's Veterinary School. He graduated three years later in 1963. Soon afterwards, he married Elizabeth Broussard who grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They moved to San Antonio where he started practicing veterinary medicine at City Vet Hospital and Alamo Dog and Cat Hospital.

While in San Antonio, he and Elizabeth, known as "Betty" to her Boerne friends, had their first son Kenneth Jr. in 1964. Later, Kenneth received a draft notice for Vietnam. He did his basic training in Camp Bullis near north San Antonio and then relocated his new family to Ft. Meade, an Army Base located between Washington DC and Maryland. In January of 1966, they had their second son, Clint at the base hospital in Ft. Meade.

When his military duty ended, he relocated back to Boerne where he opened his practice on River Road in 1968 and worked as a veterinarian for over 45 years.

Kenneth played in countless musical groups over the years, but he will be best remembered as a member of the Boerne Village Band. He was Director of the band from 1973-2010 and remained an active member to the current year. Under his direction, the band traveled to Mexico and Germany many times to share their love of german music and friendly Texas culture.

A visitation will be held on Monday, July 15, 2013, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at the Sisterdale Cemetery in Sisterdale, Texas.
