Vera L. D’Spain (nee Kneupper) passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2011, in San Antonio at the age of 92. She was born on February 22, 1919, in Kendalia to Paul and Ida Kneupper. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lee H. D’Spain, Jr., her sister Irma, and her brother Ralph.

Vera is survived by her four sons David and his wife Ivy, Ronald and his wife Linda, Donald and his wife Barbara, and Rankin and his wife Janet, as well as her sister Norma Jean. She leaves quite a legacy behind of 7 grandchildren Brett D’Spain (Sheryl), Deva Moore (Lyndon), Bryan D’Spain (Ashlie), Kristine Morgan (Rep), Debbie Brister (Lyle), Michael D’Spain (Jaime), and Shawn D’Spain; 13 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren.

Vera met her future husband Lee when she was 9 years old at a dance held at the Kendalia Dance Hall. They became sweethearts the last couple of years of their schooling, sharing a two seated desk and with Lee coming to court her on horseback. At that time, Kendalia School only went through tenth grade. They joined the Methodist Church and were married there in 1940.

They had a humble beginning with Lee working ranches around Boerne, in Marathon, New Braunfels, Bandera, and Kendalia with Vera doing cooking and housework on the ranches. All four of their boys, including a set of twins, were born in New Braunfels while the couple was living in Kendalia. They moved back to Boerne in 1948.

Vera worked at John Eddie Vogt’s Department Store for 24 years. With hard work and diligence, they eventually came to own a few businesses of their own and Lee served as Sheriff of Kendall County for almost 30 years. Lee and Vera traveled all over the United States for Lee’s jobs.

They had been married 66 years when Lee passed away four years ago. Throughout her life, Vera was involved in two Ladies Auxiliaries and many clubs in the area such as the Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary, Ladies Kendall County Fair Association, Kendalia and Pleasant Valley Community Clubs, Sons of Hermann, the Esther Circle Club at United Methodist Church, Kendalia and Spring Branch Fire Departments, Guadalupe River Association, Kendalia Neighbors Extension Homemakers, Bowling Clubs in Spring Branch and Boerne, and several others. She was also a member of the Kendalia and Boerne Bunco Clubs having been a founding member of the Kendalia club.

Vera wrote the Kendalia News and then wrote a column, County Lines for the Boerne Star, both of which spanned the life of five generations within her own family. In Vera’s own words in her last County Lines column, “I thank you for sharing your life - good times and sad times - with me…..and for allowing me the opportunity to share my life with you. I want to say one last time, good food, fun, and fellowship was enjoyed and a good time was had by all.”

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 4, 2011, from 5-7:00 p.m. at Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home. The funeral will be Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Boerne. Interment will follow at the Kneupper Cemetery in Kendalia.
