Louis Henry Borgman, Capt. USAF (ret.) passed away on March 11, 2011, surrounded by his family at his home in Boerne. He was born on Oct. 4, 1928, in Grand Rapids, Mich.
On Oct. 20, 1956, he married Mary Louis Carpenter at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in San Antonio.
Following his career as a jet pilot in the U.S. Air Force, Lou and his wife moved to Boerne in 1973. In 1974, they became the owners of the legendary Beef & Brew Restaurant at 901 S. Main, and several years later of Borgman's Sunday House Bed & Breakfast at 911 S. Main. Both businesses were sold in September 1997.
After his second retirement, Lou became a volunteer at the Boerne Public Library. Although not an expert, he loved woodworking and he also collected model airplanes. He had models of every plane he ever flew.
He was known by many as "Lou," by his customers and employees at Beef & Brew as "Mr. B," and by his fellow volunteers at the library as "Cookie Monster," because he was capable of eating every cookie in the break room.
He will be remembered for his endearing smile and sense of humor. He was a truly sweet and gentle man. There was not a mean bone in his body.
Lou is survived by his wife, Mary Louise; his daughter Marisa Hines; his son Christopher Borgman; grandchildren Courtney and Carter Hines; sister Elizabeth Becker; brothers Don and wife Margie, Raymond and wife Therese and Wayne; uncle Wheeler Tortellet and wife Phyllis; brother-in-law Lon Carpenter and wife Ann; sister-in-law Jeanne Evans and husband Houston; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2011, at 11 AM at St. Helena's Episcopal Church, 410 N. Main in Boerne, followed by interment with full military honors at Boerne Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Travis, Houston Evans, Darren Kreth, Bob Pace, Jeff Hines and James Babbitt.
