Joe Eddie Schweizer, 79, lost a 3-month battle with cancer on January 24, 2011. Joe was born on December 18, 1931, in Normal, IL.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harlan E. Schweizer and E. Albertine Schweizer. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Schweizer; son Terry Schweizer of Corpus Christi, TX; son Paul Schweizer and wife Amanda of Boerne, TX; brother Rev. Gene H. Schweizer and wife Beverly of Robert Lee, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joe graduated from Decatur High School in Decatur, IL in 1950, and Bellville Jr. College in 1954. Joe was a Draftsman-Detailer and Estimator for structural steel companies for over 45 years, retiring from Crown Steel in San Antonio in 1994. He continued to work in his home office until 2001.
Joe and Dorothy married on November 12, 1960, in Decatur, IL, moved to San Antonio in 1961, and lived in the Hill Country near Boerne for 44 years. Joe served in the US Army in the Illinois National Guard (1952-1955), was activated during the Korean War, and was stationed at Camp Cooke, CA and Fort Lewis, WA.
Joe fished, golfed, played slow-pitch softball, and coached little league baseball. He bowled in leagues in IL and San Antonio for 50 years. He bowled with the Senior Masters at Astro Bowl, Old Sports at University Bowl, and the Vagabond Travel League. He bowled in USBC National Tournaments for 18 years with a team from Peoria, IL.
Joe was a Boy Scout Leader in Boerne in the 1970’s. Joe and Dorothy belonged to the American Rabbit Breeders Assoc. for 15 years, raised pedigreed New Zealand rabbits, and participated in rabbit shows throughout Texas.
