Obituary:

Our mother, Elizabeth Anne Gray Hudson, age 83, went to be with the Lord Jesus on June 18, 2010, after suffering complications from a stroke. She is survived by her son, James A. Hudson, Jr. and her, daughter Elizabeth H. Hudson; two granddaughters, Victoria D. and Angela R. Hudson; her brother, Alfred Gordon Gray, all of Boerne, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend James A. Hudson, her parents, Alfred Gray and Edith Agnes (Gilliat) Gray, and her twin sister, Edith Mary (Gray) Caldwell.

Born on the Gilliat Ranch north of Boerne, she was a descendant of one of the original English Families in the county. Both of her grandfathers, Alfred Gordon Gilliat and George Disney Gray, individually came to Texas from London, England in 1881 to be cowboys driving cattle north on the Western trail. They fell in love with Kendall County and returned as part of the English Settlement of the Boerne area. Elizabeth started life on a dairy farm in the area and enjoyed all the events of a small town. Her favorite activities were bowling and ballroom dancing. Post World War II, her father determined his daughters were going to go to college and receive degrees that would enable them to work in the medical field. So she pursued and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Bacteriology from the University of Texas. Shortly thereafter, she married the Reverend James A. Hudson in a double ceremony at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church in Boerne and became a minister’s wife.

Our mother led a full life. Her working career began in the State Health Lab in California in the early fifties. As life dictated, she would work in various labs wherever her husband and she lived until they started a family in 1961. They raised two children. Upon returning to Boerne in 1970, she went back to school and received teaching credentials in Special Education from Incarnate Word College. She was initially hired by the Boerne School District to teach homebound students. Eventually that led to a teaching position in what is now today called the Life Skills Unit. Her career in education spanned over two decades, ending in 1992. In retirement, she joined the Historical Society and the Genealogical Society of Kendall County. She was very interested in the history of Kendall County and played a major role in the publication of several books, including a history of St. Helena’s Episcopal Church. Other activities included participation in the BACC Door Theater and the Boerne Reading Club. Advancing Alzheimer’s disease eventually forced her to discontinue these activities. She was instrumental in starting St. John’s Anglican Church, ensuring the organization would be able to have a physical location.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 AM, Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, June 23, 2010, also at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Boerne Cemetery. A reception will be held after all services at the St. John’s Anglican Church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Faith Bible Church Building Fund or to St. John’s Anglican Church of Boerne.
