Obituary:

Alfred “Mac” Gilliat, Jr. passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010, in Leakey, TX at the age of 67. He was born on November 1, 1942, in San Antonio, TX to Alfred McDonald, Sr. and Harriet Gilliat. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Mac was raised in Boerne and graduated from Boerne High School. Mac graduated from Texas A&M University and was proud of his Aggie heritage. He served in the US Army in the late 60’s. Mac was a retired County Extension Agent-AG for Baylor and Real counties where he served from 1968-1995. He served as a Director of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association from 1985-2007. He served as Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent at the San Antonio, San Angelo and Hill Country District Junior Livestock Shows in the Sheep and Goat Shows. Mac worked at the State 4-H Horse Show starting in 1968 through 2009. Mac was honored by the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association as Outstanding County Extension Agent-AG in 1987.He received the TEMA Distinguished Service Award in 1991. He is a life member of the Texas Pecan Growers Association. He received the Man of the Year in Agriculture Award in 2009. He was an advisor, mentor and friend to every county agent across the state. He also enjoyed being a rancher for many years. Everyone will greatly miss his Dutch oven cooking.

Mac is survived by: his sister Mary Bridges and her husband James of Pilot Point; his special friend Vicky Cantrell of Leakey; nephews Jim Bridges and his wife Dana and David Bridges of Denton; niece Elizabeth Bridges-Swaner; great nieces and nephews Bradley, Andrea, Erica, Christina, and James; and cousins Alfred Gray and his wife Elenita and Elizabeth Hudson.

A funeral service will be held at the Frio Canyon Baptist Church in Leakey on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 10AM. There will be a second service at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church in Boerne that same afternoon at 2PM. Interment will follow at the Boerne Cemetery.
